When you open the reply editor, it covers part of the post. If you're unlucky, you can no longer read the text you want to reply to. That's not good. (Translated by a machine from German)

It is a terrible design; apparently one (!?) programmer wants to avoid simple keyboard combinations to navigate to the bottom of a thread...

No programmer is trying to avoid anything here. It is a functional part of the new thread view.
It would have been possible to display a permanently visible comment editor below each comment, as was previously the case at the end of a thread. However, this would have destroyed the newly gained readability of threads. For this reason, the comment editor can now be accessed as a modal window via the icon.
However, this is not a problem because you can close the modal editor window at any time (by clicking on the close icon or by clicking outside the editor window). You can then read the thread and, for example, select and copy text passages to insert them as quotes. If you reopen the comment editor window, any entries made up to that point will still be there.

At the moment, I only see one problem with the reply window. When I want to insert an emoji and start with a colon and then type “face,” for example, the list is so long that it's impossible to select all of them. A scroll bar in the emoji window would be helpful here.
